Fire regulations at trade shows: B1 flame-retardant fabric (DIN 4102-B1) explained
When is B1 flame-retardant material required at trade shows? A guide to DIN 4102-B1 and EN 13501-1, what exhibition halls usually require and how to prepare your booth.
What is B1?
B1 is a fire classification under the German standard DIN 4102 and means the material is flame-retardant. The corresponding European classification is EN 13501-1. A B1-rated fabric extinguishes itself when the flame is removed instead of continuing to burn.
When is B1 required?
Indoors at trade shows, booth materials usually have to be flame-retardant, and many exhibition halls accept B1 as proof. Fire officers may carry out spot checks and ask for the certificate. Outdoors – at races, festivals, paddocks and campaigns – it is normally not required.
Always check with your venue
The rules are in the exhibitor manual or technical regulations of the trade show. Look for sections on fire safety or booth construction. If unsure, ask the venue's technical department – and feel free to forward the question to us and we will help you interpret the requirements.
